SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers were denied an opportunity to sweep as the Gateway Grizzlies plated six runs in the first inning and led the entire way en route to an 11-5 win over the Boomers at Wintrust Field on Sunday afternoon.

Gateway put Saturday night’s blowout loss behind them early as Dale Thomas and Jose Cordoba connected on three-run homers in the top of the first to open a 6-0 lead. Gateway added another run in the second to lead 7-0. Alex Calarco singled home Kellum Clark with the first Schaumburg run in the bottom of the second before Gateway starter Ben Harris took over. The righty from Crystal Lake, Ill. sat down 13 straight after the Calarco single. Anthony Calarco broke the streak with a single leading off the bottom of the seventh with Gateway ahead 11-1. The Boomers scored four runs in the eighth to claw within 11-5. Kyle Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Anthony Calarco recorded a two-run single before the final run scored on a timing play. 

Ross Thompson suffered the loss, working five innings. Kyle Moore tossed two innings with Holland Townes and Aaron Glickstein both logging a frame. Gateway finished with 17 hits. The Boomers managed just six hits in the game, four of which came from Anthony Calarco and Clark who both posted two. Schaumburg wrapped up August with a 15-11 record.

The Boomers (53-43) will have Monday off before opening the final home series of the regular season on Tuesday night at 6:30pm against the Florence Y’Alls.
