Late Rally Stopped Against Florence

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers were able to put the potential winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth but the Florence Y’Alls rode a strong starting pitching performance and were able to hold on to secure a key 7-5 win at Wintrust Field on Wednesday night.

The Boomers scored in the first inning for the second consecutive contest, building an early 4-0 lead. The first three batters of the night reached base before Anthony Calarco lifted a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. The next batter, Kellum Clark, crushed a three-run homer to center. Florence was able to come from behind and take the lead. The Y’Alls scored a run in the third and tacked on four in the fifth to jump in front 5-4, scoring three times with two outs.

Hank Zeisler hit his 25th homer in the top of the seventh, a two-run shot, to extend the advantage to 7-4. The Boomers struggled to get anything on offense after the first as Florence starter CJ Blowers did not allow a runner into scoring position after the third until the eighth. Schaumburg managed a pair of two-out singles in the second and then recorded just two hits until the ninth. Three walks led to a run but two Florence relievers were able to end the game.

Cole Zaffiro suffered the loss on the mound, working five innings and allowing five runs while walking two and striking out six. Holland Townes tossed a pair of innings with Aaron Glickstein and Tom Vincent each tossing an inning. Alec Craig and Kyle Fitzgerald both tallied two hits in the game as the Boomers finished with eight while drawing six walks.

The Boomers (54-44) will conclude the home portion of the regular season schedule against the Y’Alls on Thursday night at 6:30pm. Thursday will serve as Fan Appreciation Night presented by AARP: Illinois and will feature a fireworks display along with a drove show. Drone shows are presented by SkillUp.
