WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Schaumburg Boomers scored four runs in the seventh inning to lower their magic number down to one to win the West Division, securing a 6-5 win over the Washington Wild Things in Pennsylvania on Saturday night.

Jeff Liquori led off the game with a homer for Washington in the bottom of the first, handing the hosts a 1-0 lead. The leadoff batter has homered for the Wild Things in the first two games of the series. Cole Turney annihilated a two-run opposite field homer in the top of the second to give the Boomers their first lead of the series. Another homer from Washington evened the game in the bottom of the second and then the pitchers took over. Both starters worked through six innings and did not allow another run.

The Boomers were able to break through and seize control in the seventh. Kellum Clark led off with his second homer in as many nights and his 14th of the season. The scoring did not stop there. Kai Moody singled home a run with one away and Chase Dawson tacked on a two-run single with two away as the Boomers opened a 6-2 edge. Washington was able to plate a run in the bottom of the inning to pull within 6-3. The Wild Things scored twice more in the eighth and had the tying run at third but All-Star lefty Caleb Riedel recorded a strikeout to hold onto the lead at 6-5. Darrell Thompson twirled a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts to secure the win. Thompson owns four saves in five appearances since joining the team and has recorded 10 strikeouts in 5.1 innings.

The offense finished with 11 hits in the victory. Dawson, Kyle Fitzgerald and Turney all posted a pair of hits. Ross Thompson allowed just two runs on solo homers in six innings to tally his 11th win of the year, matching the team’s single season record and the league lead.

The Boomers (56-45) will wrap up the regular season with the finale against Washington on Sunday afternoon at 3:05pm. A win or a loss by Windy City would hand the Boomers the division title.
