What is a Boomer?

The name for the brand-new professional baseball team in Schaumburg, Ill. emanates from a nickname for the male Greater Prairie Chicken which used to be abundant in the Midwest but now are classified as "vulnerable."

The Schaumburg Boomers are proud to honor the Greater Prairie Chicken of Illinois.

A boomer is a nickname for the male Greater Prairie Chicken, which appear differently than the female. Males have yellow-orange comb over their eyes and dark, elongated head feathers that can be raised along the neck. A circular, orange neck patch is inflated during lekking. Females have shorter head feathers and lack the male's long yellow comb and orange neck patch.

An extremely territorial species, the male Greater Prairie Chicken is renowned for furiously defending its booming grounds and a special booming dance during mating season. As seen in the Schaumburg Boomers logo, the depiction of the male Greater Prairie Chicken was chosen for the distinct feathers on its head and neck patch for the booming call.
