Open House Recap - Welcome Aboard Carlos May

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers opened their doors to a throng fans for the club’s Open House on Saturday. The event featured an Easter Egg Hunt, the first opportunity to purchase single-game tickets and the addition of former Chicago White Sox Outfielder Carlos May to the Boomers Coaching Staff.

Well over 500 fans piled in to Boomers Stadium to tour the ballpark, enjoy a sample of the quality of food available from award-winning Levy Restaurants and purchase single-game tickets for the first time. A number of lucky fans won prizes such as a free suite night and tickets to the home opener, while hundreds of kids packed the new playing surface installed by the Schaumburg Park District and White Sox groundskeeper Roger “the Sodfather” Bossard last fall.

Bossard’s new field is not the only White Sox connection for the Boomers as Sox outfielder Carlos May, a two-time MLB all-star, was introduced as the Boomers First Base Coach for the club’s Inaugural Season in 2012, which kicks off on Friday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m. when the Boomers take on the Florence Freedom at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.

May played 1,002 career games for the White Sox between 1968 and 1976. Before losing his right thumb to a mortar accident while on Marine Reserve Duty in August of 1969, May was selected AL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News. May made a courageous comeback from the injury a year later, hitting .285 with 28 doubles. A two-time All-Star, May’s best slugging numbers came in 1973 when he hit 20 homers and drove in 96 runs.

The former outfielder and first baseman finished his White Sox career with exactly 1,000 hits and nearly 500 runs scored and RBI. In a 10-year career, May hit .274 with 90 home runs and 536 RBIs in 1165 games. May collected 85 career stolen bases and 545 runs scored, and in 4,120 at bats, he had 1,127 career hits.

The Schaumburg Boomers box office opens full-time on Monday, April 9 and will be open Monday through Friday during the week.
